Each week, we feature a couple from our latest issue.

After a long day at work, Katie Schmitkons went to her then-boyfriend’s place for a late dinner. When she walked in the door, Dean Nusbaum had prepared a homemade meal for their designated “date night.”

“The table was set, he had gotten me flowers, and he even bought a candle,” Katie says. Their routine date night took a surprising turn, however, when Dean popped the question. “It was very romantic.”

At the wedding, a dried bouquet made of all the flowers that Dean had offered to Katie during their two-year relationship was on the front table. Their guest book was a wooden puzzle, designed by a friend, that they asked everyone to sign. “It turned out really nice,” says Katie.

Familial touches were the most memorable aspects of the day for Katie, however. Her grandmother was able to come from Iowa for the ceremony, and her mother—who usually doesn’t wear makeup—was convinced to get her makeup and hair done for the occasion. Katie’s brother gave an impromptu speech, and Dean’s grandparents took “the cutest picture” at the photo booth, Katie says.
