Each week, we feature a couple from our latest issue.
Shelby and Nicklaus Jurden sure know how to blend a family. It all began five years after they started dating: Shelby got home from work, where flowers were waiting by the door. A note inside the bouquet talked about how long they had known each other. Next to that was a picture of her and Nicklaus, and tied to it with purple string was another note.
“Each note started with ‘[X number of] days after we met’ and then a short story with pictures from that particular memory,” Shelby says.
The string went all the way through the house and finally led upstairs. The whole floor was filled with candles, and a heart made of string contained one last note.
“Then he came out of the room wearing his gray suit and proposed,” Shelby says.
Thirteen months later, their officiant delivered a personalized speech during the ceremony that Shelby says was a major highlight of the day. She and Nicklaus also organized a unity candy jar ceremony, in lieu of a traditional ceremony, that included Nicklaus’ daughter, Cayden, honoring her role in their new family. The candy jar was a hit with Cayden as well: Shelby recalls seeing her sneak a piece of candy from it, before going back a second time to get a piece for the bridesmaid she was standing next to!
Later, during their first dance, the Jurdens blended their families further by inviting them to join in on the first dance, when the DJ transitioned from Sleeping at Last’s cover of “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)” to the original version from The Proclaimers.
